Dr. Ruth is for those of you who remember the seventies and eighties as a time of soaring rock anthems. A time when the music really got your glands going.
Dr. Ruth was thought up by six Phoenix musicians back in 1992 who realized that most of the working cover bands were playing watered down, impudent renditions of the same old top forty tunes. All the original bands were refusing to bathe, wearing baggy clothes and moving to Seattle.
These other acts with their lip synching, sampling technology and/or bad personal hygiene just didn't deliver. Dr. Ruth sensed a void in the scene and decided to take action. Betting that they weren't alone in their longing for the music of the not so distant past, the band decided on a repertoire considered out of reach by most musicians.
Classic rock is just that . . . classic! It is supposed to bring back memories and take you back to a better time. Many fans who were left scratching their heads by the grunge scene of the early 90's found themselves drawn to classic rock. Today classic rock is bigger and more popular than ever.
The idea was simple enough. Start a cover band. Play the instruments. Sing the songs. The material is all upbeat classic rock n' roll that most other acts won't touch because of either talent or equipment limitations. Covering songs by Boston, Styx, Journey, Pink FLoyd, Rush, Elton John, Toto (and many others!) Dr. Ruth plays something for everyone. The musicians are professionals not used car salesmen moonlighting as musicians. Their collective experience speaks for itself.
During its 13+ year history Dr. Ruth has opened for Kansas, Cheap Trick, Billy Idol, Steppenwolf, REO Speedwagon, Joan Jett, Blue Oyster Cult, The Tubes, Warrant, 38 Special, The Phoenix Coyotes NHL Hockey Team and many other national acts. They have played the MGM Grand and Disneyworld for large corporate events. The band is a regular at Tempe Arizona's New Year's Eve Block Party, the third largest NYE event in the nation. Suffice it to say the band is just as comfortable in front of 10,000 fans as they are in front of 200.
